Top Tips for Styling Your Own Wedding

Styling your own wedding can be a fun and rewarding experience, but it also has the potential to become overwhelming very quickly! Here are my top tips to help you style your own wedding like a pro:

  1. Establish your vision

Start by identifying the vision for your wedding. Think about the type of atmosphere you want to create and any particular themes or motifs you want to include.

Atmosphere: Are you looking for a laid-back, festival feel or something more elegant? Maybe you’d like something a bit more refined for the ceremony and wedding breakfast but want to feel able to let your hair down in the evening.

Think about events both you and your partner loved; what was it about the event that made it special? Was it the venue? The decor? The little details that made it personal? It really doesn’t matter what made it special, as long as you can capture it on your vision board to use as inpso.

2. Decide on a style

Choose a style that fits with your vision, venue and personality. Are you going for rustic and bohemian, elegant and classic or do you prefer more of a festival-inspired vibe? Once you have your style, you can start selecting decor items and accessories that reflect that style.

3. Choose a colour scheme

Choose a colour scheme that complements your wedding vision. Consider using a neutral colour as your base and adding one or two accent colours to add interest and depth. Don’t forget that other chosen accents, such as metallic accents or weathered wood, can form part of your colour scheme.

If you’re not sure about colours, try saving a screenshot of your Pinterest board and then uploading it to Coolers, the amazing colour palette generator. Then you can select colours directly from your image, and export your chosen palette to suppliers, so they know what you’re looking for. You won’t always be able to get the exact shades you’ve picked out but it’s a great starting place.

4. Create a mood board

Once you have your vision, style and colour scheme in mind, create a mood board to help guide your design decisions. Pinterest is a great place to start gathering inspiration and creating a visual representation of your vision. You may already have lots of boards but it’s worth creating a new one, that you can share with prospective suppliers or even family and friends who are helping you. Just remember to make it a secret board, if you don’t want everyone knowing what you have planned!

Don’t forget about the benefits of a physical mood board either. Having samples in front of you can make it easier to see if they fit in with your overall vision or not. I’d recommend something that you can keep more than just paper in, and Ikea does a fantastic little cardboard filing box for only 50p. Click here for more info.

5. Select your decor

Choose decor elements that fit with your style and colour scheme. This may include ceremony decor, table centrepieces, and other decorative touches. Don’t forget that hiring items, such as furniture, props and lighting, is a great way to bring your vision to life and make your budget go further.

6. DIY elements

If you like getting crafty, why not try creating some DIY decor elements? This could include handmade signs or customised favours for guests. If you love the idea of bespoke handmade items but just don’t have the time or skills, there’s always Etsy for every imaginable option under the sun!

7. Dress up your space

Add some extra touches to your wedding space by dressing up the chairs, adding table runners for a pop of colour, and incorporating elements such as fairy lights, candles or lanterns to give some sparkle as the sun goes down.

8. Coordinate your attire

Make sure your wedding attire and accessories, coordinate with your overall wedding vision. Consider incorporating the decor colours and style elements into your attire, or vice versa. That might be with dress colours for bridesmaids or ties for groomsmen

9. Focus on details

Creating a cohesive look is about paying some attention to the details. This includes selecting the right fonts and paper for your stationery, choosing the right type of flowers for your centrepieces, and selecting the right music to fit your vision. If you’re looking for a rustic theme, then a handwritten font is going to look much better than Time New Roman. Equally, if you’re after a festival vibe, a calligraphy-styled font with lots of flourishes is probably going to look a bit over the top!

For my Brighton wedding, we had postcards printed with a picture of our faces in a ‘Just Married’ Head-in-a-Hole photo wall. It wasn’t fancy but it created the perfect fun note for our laid-back wedding day!

10. Add personal touches

Think of your favourite places as table names. Serve your favourite food and drink, and why not display a gallery wall of you both through the years?

When it comes to music, make sure you have a playlist of your favourite bands, or if the budget allows, hire a band who can play it live for you. There is something about singing your favourite songs, with all your favourite people, that never fails to create amazing memories.

Remember to have fun and be creative when styling your own wedding. With a little planning and attention to detail, you can create a beautiful and memorable day that reflects and celebrates you both.
